Alf (ou ALF), o personagem que dá nome à série, é um alienígena que teria nascido em 28 de outubro de 1756.
O real nome do alienígena é Gordon Shumway, que seria um sobrevivente do planeta Melmac, onde ele fazia parte da guarda da órbita. O planeta explodiu em 28 de outubro de 1986, devido à armas nucleares. Alf consegue escapar deste desastre e se perde no espaço, colidindo-se com a garagem da família Tanner, no planeta Terra. Willy Tanner acaba apelidando o alienígena ALF, que é um acrônimo em inglês que representa um ser extra-terrestre, mais ou menos como a sigla ET. A partir de então ALF passa a viver escondido com a família Tanner.
